The Mars Express Orbiter has recently detected a 12-mile long lake of liquid water under the polar ice caps of Mars consequently raising the hopes of scientists that life could found beneath the surface.
Specifically, the European spacecraft sent back the findings on Wednesday and ended the speculation of scientists all around the world. As for what they found exactly, one mile beneath the southern Martian ice cap is a liquid water lake similar to that of Lake Vostok, which is a body of water that was found about 2.5 miles beneath Antarctica and contains more than 3,500 species, as you can imagine this raises hopes that life will exist in the lake beneath Mars an awful lot.
However, the only downside to this discovery is that it was found using radar technology, this means that the lake has not been seen or contacted directly, however, since scientists are stating that there is almost nothing else it could be, they stand by the fact that it will indeed by a lake.
ESA’s Mars Express project scientist, Dmitri Titov, had this to say: “This thrilling discovery is a highlight for planetary science and will contribute to our understanding of the evolution of Mars, the history of water on our neighbour planet and its habitability.”
