After confirming that they will, in fact, bring back the PlayStation 1, the gaming console manufacturers have officially announced that they have already set about creating the company’s next console. However, don’t get too excited as it isn’t known whether the next piece of tech will be the PlayStation 5 or another sub-product. What initially kicked off the rumour was Sony’s Kenichiro Yoshida stating that “it’s necessary to have a next-generation hardware” in a recent interview.

Although, since then the sources that spoke to the Financial Times, the company that broke the initial story, expressed that the next-generation PlayStation may be fairly similar to the PlayStation 4, stating that: “early indications were that it might not represent a major departure from the PS4, and that the fundamental architecture would be similar.” Although the Financial Times took the info and questioned the product type in their article, questioning whether “Sony might be planning a tablet that would connect to multiple devices as online streaming of games becomes more widespread and the company seeks to derive ever greater synergies between its games and movie divisions.” This would indicate that the next product will likely not be a successor to the PlayStation Vita since a “tablet” type product is mentioned, instead, it’s possible that the “handheld” tech will be in direct competition with the Nintendo Switch.
