After the result of Proposition 64, from the 1st of January 2018 it will be legal for businesses in California to sell marijuana for recreational purposes, meaning that customers will no longer need a doctor’s note in order to get their hands on the substance. However, there have been many regulations put in place in order for the government to make sure the change in law is a positive one. For example, you will have to be at least 21 years of age, a maximum of only one ounce can be bought, only six plants can be grown legally at any given time, public locations such as schools and playgrounds tight restrictions as well as other locations where cigarette smoking is prohibited, and finally smoking while driving is of course still prohibited.
As for other regulations, the required license that the shops need to own in order to sell cannabis legally might not be issued immediately to those who wish to have one. Furthermore, businesses have to be located in specific areas, as some districts such Bakersfield, Pasadena, Riverside, Fresno and Anaheim have still not allowed the sale of recreational cannabis and remains strong on the political position that selling pot should be for medicinal purposes only.
