North-London rap artist Natty Wylah has announced that we can expect a new mixtape named ‘BRUCE’ to drop on 5th March via Gecky Records. Ahead of the tape, he’s shared a namesake track from the project, produced by Srigala.
Inspired by a mix of jazz, grime and post-punk, Natty's smooth flow has been named one of Amazing Radio’s ‘Tips for 2021.’ As well as being a musician, Natty is also an experienced model, his talent then further extends to art and design, meaning that he creates the artwork for each of his releases.
CAN YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME YOU WROTE A SONG? DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT WAS ABOUT?
I had a little cassette recorder thing when I was knee-high so I imagine I probably dribbled and babbled a song into that thing! Probably dreaming of dinosaurs…
WHEN DID YOU FULLY COMMIT TO A CAREER IN MUSIC, AND WHAT MADE YOU TAKE THAT STEP?
I fully committed after I left Art School, realised music is where I feel most capable of expressing myself.
WHAT'S THE PROUDEST MOMENT OF YOUR CAREER?
I organised and headlined my own event called the Pigeon Hole, we screened films from some talented friends and me and the band played after a long night I felt shattered but elated.
HAVE YOU EVER MADE A TRACK THAT FELT TOO PERSONAL OR "OUT THERE" TO RELEASE?
I’ve made plenty of tracks that feel real raw, but for that reason, I’m planning to release them because it’s not the artists’ fault they’re too human for someone else ears.
WHAT'S YOUR ADVICE FOR THOSE YOUNG PEOPLE LOOKING TO MAKE A CAREER IN MUSIC?
Don’t every compromise or worry what your friend, the industry, your aunties dog sitter, the bossman from the shop or even your cat thinks of what you do. Try and focus on keeping it pure and true to what you want, and the rest will follow.
WHAT A SECRET THAT EVEN YOUR BEST MATE DOESN'T KNOW?
I finished the milk.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY?
Falling out of a tree in regents park to find my lizard friend Gecky, burgling the flowers and distributing them to the Kiln Place residents on the way to A+E to drink Wrey & Nephews in a neck brace with H.
WHAT LYRIC ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY?
trust me man it’s all one of the same/ I see the digital era and it’s coming its plain/ to see the pixels, the poison, spoiling your brain/ avoiding the stream of the trends and the main/ commercial conformists who don’t see the same/ as the peeps that i'm close with, peeps who remain/ deep in the heart said my heart is a pane/ of a stain-glassed window that glows with the flame /of the fresh lit candle, placed out of sight/ can’t see the source but you sure see the bright/ lights that contrast and dance through the night/ like the flight of a firefly, when i'm on the mic/ said i'm sharp like a stalagmite shard with the spike! etc. etc. (Raise up the MANA) I have such good memories of rapping this and my friends in the crowd rapping the lyrics with me with such glee.
WOULD YOU RATHER BE COMPLETELY INSANE AND KNOW THAT YOU'RE INSANE, OR COMPLETELY INSANE AND BELIEVE YOU ARE SANE?
It’s weird because some people are looked upon as if they are ‘insane’ but I think if one can avoid becoming deterred by someone’s seemingly alien mannerisms there can be some profound truths by those that are outcasted from ‘normal’ society… deemed as insane. Sanity is relative innit - I feel like in world were everybody adheres to certain ideals I might seem like an insane person amongst the masses… that being said I think I’m ignorantly blissful to these ‘insanities’ so in answer to the question I think if I knew I was insane it might
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU IN THE FUTURE?
I’ve got so much goodness in my bag for the future. Collaborative EPs… one with the band Sunken due in the summer plus others and a self-produced EP too! You an expect some wonderfully weird shit - I’m tryna bust a Lee Perry and push the boat out!!
