This past week has been a rollercoaster of emotions for both leading election Candidates. Both Donald Trump and Joe Biden have been eagerly awaiting the final votes to be counted and announced.

The Collage Electoral system the USA uses means that, each state has a point value and whichever candidate receives the most votes in that state receives the point value. For example, California is worth 55 points. The majority of votes in California were in favour of Joe Biden; thus, he received 55 points. A presidential candidate needs to receive over 270 points (the majority) to be the next President.

Over the course of this week, votes have been counted in each state and the points have been given to their respected candidate. For the majority of the week Joe Biden has been in the lead but, the votes for the final key, states had not been counted yet – meaning it could have gone either way.

That is until today. The votes are in and Joe Biden has won the Presidential election and will be the next President of The United States of America. 290 points to 214. He has released a statement, saying “I am honoured and humbled by the trust the American people have placed in me and in Vice-President-elect Harris… In the face of unprecedented obstacles, a record number of Americans voted. Proving once again, that democracy beats deep in the heart of America… With the campaign over, it’s time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation.”

We will continue to update this story as new information comes in. Congratulations to both Donald Trump and Joe Biden for a nail-biting election! Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter to stay up to date with the latest World News.
