PLASTIC HOTLINE
-
After working as a chemical analyst by day, C J McMullan uses his free time to develop Plastic Hotline, a brand that fuses streetwear inspirations with an array of staple garments. Consequently, Plastic Hotline is able to remain down to Earth with its buyers while still offering products that are in touch with the scene.
We got to catch up with C J McMullan, this is what he had to say.
WHO IS THE MAN BEHIND PLASTIC HOTLINE?
I am C J McMullan and I created Plastic Hotline. I live in sunny Scotland and I paint and write in my free time, as well as run Plastic Hotline of course. I have a full time job as a chemical analyst but by night I try to create and inspire.

WHERE DID THE NAME PLASTIC HOTLINE COME FROM?
It took me 24 solid hours of brainstorming ideas for names. No shit. My problem was that everything I liked was already taken! I needed a name unique enough to use for all my social handles as well as the website's domain. Other than that I can’t pin it down, It’s a mystery you will never know.

WHAT DO YOU THINK SEPARATES PLASTIC HOTLINE FROM OTHER BRANDS?
I have tried to focus on the basics with Plastic Hotline. I want us to be as sustainable as possible so I have teamed up with One Tree Planted, a charity in the US that provides the option of planting a tree at checkout. Additionally, every item we sell is made to order so there is no waste stock sitting around. As for the designs, I have mainly tried to keep the aesthetic pretty minimal, I like loud, crazy clothing but sometimes less is more.

WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION FROM WHEN IT COMES TO DESIGNING?
I get inspiration from everywhere. I basically make clothing for me to wear and hope that other people enjoy it also. I always ask my dogs for ideas too, those canines are creative geniuses.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ASPECT OF THE SCENE/INDUSTRY YOU FIND YOURSELF IN?
I LOVE THE DIVERSITY OF UPCOMING CLOTHING BRANDS AND THE SOCIAL CULTURE SURROUNDING IT. SOCIAL MEDIA HAS MADE ALL OF THIS POSSIBLE. IT’S BRILLIANT TO FIND LIKE MINDED PEOPLE, AS WELL AS OTHERS, WHO CAN APPRECIATE YOUR WORK.
AS A FOLLOW-UP QUESTION, WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVOURITE ASPECT?
I do not like kitsch stuff at all.
WHAT WOULD YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION BE?
I love 1017 ALYX 9SM and I would sell a kidney to work with them.
IF YOU COULD GET ONE MESSAGE ACROSS TO YOUR FOLLOWERS, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Be yourself.

WHAT PIECE OF APPAREL ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF CREATING SO FAR?
I love my DOLLFACE t-shirt and also my BIO BACTERIA patterned watch. Both are simple in essence but unique at the same time.

WHERE DO YOU SEE THE PLASTIC HOTLINE BRAND IN 5 YEARS?
I’d love to have built a loyal community to share my creations with as well as have the ability to do pop-ups and collaborations, but it's still early days for the brand right now.
