This week marks the first ever National Democracy Week, bringing together organisations from across the public, private, and charity sectors in a bid to remind us of the importance of being registered to vote. It comes at a significant point in time, namely the Suffrage Centenary – 100 years since the first women and lower class men won the right to vote.
It’s an old adage that politics is a real conversation killer, but the funny thing is that over the past 2-3 years there’s been a real and significant increase in democratic participation in the UK – most of it as a direct result of the millennial vote alongside some of the biggest reforms to our electoral registration system in a century.
More people than ever are going online and registering to vote and by doing so, taking the opportunity to influence everything from how their local community is run, to deciding who the leaders of this country should be. National Democracy Week aims to build on that trend. Communities and local groups around the country are organising events to promote democratic participation so look out for an event near you.
