Ecuador’s political landscape has been marred by a surge in violence, with the recent killing of the country’s youngest mayor, Brigitte García, raising serious concerns about the safety of elected officials.

The 27-year-old mayor of San Vicente, along with her communications director, was found shot dead inside a rented car on Sunday. This incident follows a string of political assassinations that has shaken the nation.

San Vicente, located in the coastal province of Manabí, has been particularly affected by drug-related violence. Gangs smuggling cocaine to international markets have fueled a rise in crime, with Manabí witnessing the murders of prominent figures like Manta’s mayor and a Puerto López mayoral candidate in recent months.

The violence extends beyond Manabí. The shocking assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in the capital, Quito, last year underscored the national threat. Investigations suggest the killing was orchestrated by a criminal gang from within a prison.

In response to the escalating violence, President Daniel Noboa declared a state of emergency in January, focusing on curbing the activities of armed groups. While the government touts over 150,000 security operations and the detention of more than 10,000 suspects, critics argue that these measures are insufficient.

The murder of Mayor García has reignited calls for stricter measures to ensure the safety of politicians. Opposition leader Luisa González expressed her deep concern on a social media platform, stating that the current situation leaves no one safe in Ecuador.

This incident highlights the urgent need for a multi-pronged approach to tackle political violence in Ecuador. Effective law enforcement, disrupting gang operations, and addressing the root causes of crime are crucial steps towards restoring a sense of security and stability in the nation.
