Alex Honnold Left His Harness Behind To Climb ‘The Phoenix’

Alex Honnold, the American rock climber best known for his ‘free solo’ documentary, has had his process further revealed, this time thanks to a video uploaded by REEL ROCK.

The video – which can be seen above – shares an “intimate look behind the scenes during Alex Honnold’s historic 2011 ropeless ascent of The Phoenix (5.13) as told by filmmaker Peter Mortimer.” The climb was completed in Yosemite and was arguably the hardest pitch that has ever been free-soloed, requiring extensive crack-climbing techniques.
