E-commerce giants, Amazon, have expanded their empire, in the form of a cashless supermarket in London. The first of its kind outside of the U.S.
The supermarket, named Amazon Fresh, opened in Ealing in west London on Thursday 4th March 2021. Customers first check-in at the gate to the shop with a QR code on the Amazon app. Their items are automatically tallied and charged to their Amazon account as they leave; removing the checkout process entirely.
The 2,500 square foot store uses a series of cameras, sensors and AI to track what items are removed from the shelves and leave the store. There is also a team of staff who restock shelves and prepare food around the clock.
