Thanks to CBS All Access, fans of Stephen King can finally get a peek at what to expect from the upcoming series adaptation of his much-loved 1978 novel, ‘The Stand.’
As for what to expect, The Stand is set in a post-apocalyptic world after a weaponized strain of influenza kills nearly everyone on the planet. Following this world-shifting event, the few survivors, united in groups, establish a new social system and engage in good versus evil confrontation. Interestingly, in writing the book, King looked to fuse the grandiose spirit of The Lord of the Rings with contemporary America. The upcoming show is set to arrive with an impressive cast, including the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, Alexander Skarsgård, Odessa Young, James Marsden, Amber Heard, Owen Teague and Nat Wolff.
When speaking on the project, Benjamin Cavell, the showrunner and executive producer, said: “During the two years we spent making The Stand, we all felt the responsibility of adapting what may be the most beloved work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, but none of us could have imagined that Stephen King’s 40-year-old masterpiece about a global pandemic would come to be so eerily relevant.” Adding: “We’re honoured to tell this sprawling, epic story, including a new coda that Stephen King has wanted to add for decades. We’re so proud of this show and its attempt to find meaning and hope in the most uncertain of times. We can’t wait to share it with the world.”
