Just recently, the internet unsurprisingly turned on YouTube after the global broadcasting platform not only removed ChilledCow’s much-loved ‘lofi hip hop radio’ livestream but also the whole channel too.
As for why, not much explanation was given, with the only clues coming from an email that was shared by ChilledCow via Twitter. In YouTube’s cessation notice you could see that the account was terminated for supposedly being “not in compliance” with the platform’s Terms of Services. Consequently, ChilledCow was removed, but thanks to a vocal rally of fans that shared just how useful the account had been throughout their lives, YouTube caught wind of the controversy and reversed their decision.
At the moment the channel is back and running as normal, and thank god for that. The original lofi hip hop radio played continuously for almost two years, with reports stating that it streamed for over 13,000 hours and accumulated 218 million views.
Despite the story having a happy ending, many pointed out that this kind of carelessness from YouTube isn’t acceptable. If it were to be a smaller channel with fewer fans then the chances of it being reinstated would be close to zero.
