The adult-film provider that is Pornhub has become one of the most active websites of all-time, and each year they take the time to release their mind-blowing statistics, with 2019 being no exception.
As for what we see, Pornhub appears to be expanding in comparison to last year, with the number of searches completed going up by 8.7 billion. As well as this, engagement was also at an all-time high with 203M video votes and 11.5M video comments.
As you can imagine, this upwards trend was reflected in the number of videos published in 2019, that number being 6.83 million in total. Consequently, the meeting of increased engagement and increased material lead to a mindblowing fact. That being that every second 209 gigabytes of data were transferred.
To put this into perspective, if we assume that on average the video quality was just shy of HD, then during every second of 2019, the human race was accumulatively watching over 2-weeks of porn.
Now, although these statistics will probably make you giggle and realise why aliens haven’t visited, there is a much more serious side to this. Many receive these statistics with concern, questioning whether this growth – and the existence of Pornhub and other similar sites at all -is even healthy.
For example, Philip Zimbardo Ph.D. of PsychologyToday.com stated that:
There is a growing body of research that says watching porn may lead to some not so desirable individual and social outcomes both in the short- and long-term.
Some people can watch porn occasionally and not suffer significant side effects; however, plenty of people out there, including teens and pre-teens with highly plastic brains, find they are compulsively using high-speed Internet porn with their tastes becoming out of sync with their real-life sexuality.
Just visit the sites YourBrainOnPorn and Reddit’s No Fap (no masturbating to online porn) forum to see stories from thousands of young people struggling to overcome what they feel is an escalating compulsion.
In the first-ever brain study on Internet porn users, which was conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, researchers found that the hours and years of porn use were correlated with decreased grey matter in regions of the brain associated with reward sensitivity, as well as reduced responsiveness to erotic still photos
Less grey matter means less dopamine and fewer dopamine receptors. The lead researcher, Simone Kühn, hypothesized that “regular consumption of pornography more or less wears out your reward system.”
