With Pride month is full swing there is no better time for a country to decriminalize gay sex. Something which has actually – and thankfully – taken in place in Botswana, the landlocked country in Southern Africa.

Specifically, on Tuesday Botswana’s High Court officially made it clear that they will be overturning colonial-era laws that, as of now, criminalize homosexuality. This is, of course, a huge step in the right direction, and one that was made possible thanks to the continuous work of activists in and out of the country.

While speaking on the topic Judge Michael Leburu said that “human dignity is harmed when minority groups are marginalized,” adding that these ideas “deserve a place in the museum or archives and not in the world”.

An obvious consequence of this was the rejoicing of the LGBT community, many of which can’t believe the progress that has been made, however, there is still a staggering amount of work to be done, with over a 30 African countries alone still categorising gay sex as an illegal activity.
