Ever since the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) began collecting annual data on smokers back in 1965, they have found that the number of American adults that carry out the habit has dropped by a whopping 67%.
Specifically, health officials made an official announcement on Thursday that just 14% of the population now smokes, the lowest level ever recorded in the country. Furthermore, the data collected in 2017 also highlights the fact that the number of smokers aged between 18 and 24 had dropped once again to 10%, that’s a relatively large decrease from the previous figure of 13% that was recorded back in 2016.
However, it’s not all good news, despite the number of cigarette smokers lowering, the number of individuals who vape nicotine is on the increase, especially amongst younger citizens. Having said that, the data outlining the health benefits swapping from smoking to vaping is solid, although it’s not quite as ideal as no nicotine based habits. I guess we will have to wait and see where the trend goes from here.
