The iconic artist that is Banksy has always been at the front and centre of some of the art industry’s biggest stories and once again he has lived up to his reputation. This time Bristol’s very own made headlines after having one of his most famous pieces of art self-destruct shortly after it was sold for $1.4 million.
Specifically, at the event held at Sotheby’s in New York City his artwork titled ‘Girl With a Balloon’ (2006) was sold at a record-setting bid shortly before the canvas was fed through a shredder built inside the faux-gilt frame. This came as a surprise to everyone in the room including the organisers who had the piece removed from the room as a man dressed in black sporting sunglasses and a hat was seen causing a small commission with the security guards near the entrance, making people wonder if it was the artist himself.
