After putting aside $1 billion for the venture, Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ series has officially taken on board two new writers to steer the 5-series-long program in a successful direction.
The writers that will be co-writing the series based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic works are JD Payne and Patrick McKay, the same two who worked on Star Trek: Beyond and Godzilla vs. Kong.As for their response to attaining the positions, they both had this to say: “The rich world that J.R.R. Tolkien created is filled with majesty and heart, wisdom and complexity,” adding: “We are absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Amazon to bring it to life anew. We feel like Frodo, setting out from the Shire, with a great responsibility in our care — it is the beginning of the adventure of a lifetime.”
As for what direction Amazon are planning to take, after paying approximately $250 million for the copyrights and an expected further $500 million for the production costs they are aiming to produce a series that will “explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring.” Although it has been confirmed that it will not be taking place in the same world as Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.
