The mental health charity Mind surveyed over 1000 GPs and found that not only has the number of mental health appointments risen in the last 12 months but to the point where roughly 40% of sessions now revolve around mental health and the issues surrounding it.

As for what this means, Mind has started to call for GPs to go through training specifically designed to help deal with patients who may suffer from mental health complications more effectively. The reason why this was the conclusion is that currently within the 21 compulsory modules of training you have to complete in order to become a GP, only one of them involves learning about mental health issues.

Furthermore, it’s found that those who often look for a work placement focusing on mental health often find themselves working at hospitals rather than community psychiatric services meaning that the consequence is that very little help can be provided to those who are in need of it.
