18-year-old singer-songwriter carina has just released her first EP, spaceout! Heavily inspired by Low-Fi beats and R&B the EP features 5 tracks.
We got the chance to catch up with carina and discuss her background and the release of her new EP. Here's what she had to say...
How are you doing?
I am well! feeling excited to be releasing spaceout! as I have been waiting to get it out for ages.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Hi! I’m carina. I’m 18 and I write and create a lot of music in my bedroom. my first project spaceout! was written and produced entirely by me when I was 15/16, and since then I have been creating much much more. writing music to me, is about communicating something that I experience effectively enough that lots of others can connect to it.
How did you get into singing/songwriting?
I played the piano when I was younger because my dad always said it was important to try out one sport and one musical instrument, but I found it quite boring only playing other people’s songs. I’ve always had a creative streak, and eventually, i started writing my own music when i was around 12 and since then I have been developing my writing.
What shoe would you say best describes you and why?
Probably bowling shoes, the ones that you have to wear when you go bowling. I’m actually terrible at bowling but those shoes give off the same energy as me I don’t know what it is. my friends can vouch for that.
In your ”bedroom session 1: frontin” you used a cereal box in the video. What cereal was the box from?
Crunchy nut cereal. Crunchy nut slaps
What is your favourite toast toping?
Butter and jam. You may think i’m boring but they slap. Classics.
If you could work with any artist, who would it be and why?
Well, when I was younger I was a huge ARMY, if you don’t know what that is don’t worry about it, so just for my childhood self, I would love to have Min Yoongi produce one of my songs for me. But, if we’re talking about who I like now, I would say Dominic Fike. I loveeee his style and I think it would complement mine. He’s also incredibly attractive so that’s a bonus. beabadoobee as well.
What is your biggest inspiration?
In terms of what inspires me to write, it is usually when I feel a very specific feeling. Like some emotion that I feel like is relatable but, I feel like people don’t talk about; for example I had this the other day when I felt really small and insignificant. I wrote a song from that. But most of my songs come from one of those specific feelings - skets & stoners being when you’re at a party and everyone is hammered but you don’t really want to drink. summer air buzz is when you’re overheated on a hot day.
Your new EP just dropped Can you tell us a bit about it?
It is called spaceout! Because at the time of its creation I was very much struggling with dissociation issues (spacing out to an unhealthy extent) and so a would say the project is essentially capturing teenage London life through my spacey lens. There are lots of sound bites from my videos on my phone of my friends at the time, to help immerse the listener in my world. It’s also my first project, and an introduction to my sound generally.
What is next for you? Do you have any plans to tour soon or, is it back to the studio?
Oh, my days I would LOVE to tour but unfortunately, I do not have the means for that yet (I’m working on it). But, I actually have the next ep ready to go so… stay tuned! There is LOTS more music on the way, my managers would say too much in fact. I am a bit of a songwriting machine.
