With the Game of Thrones finale taking place this week, we always knew we were destined to see some ridiculous viewing figures, however, the ratings have turned out to be even more significant than that.

In fact, the sixth episode of the program’s most-watched season turned out to be the most watched episode of the whole franchise. Specifically, the instalment titled “The Iron Throne” clocked in 13.6 million viewers for its initial airing, while replays and early streaming figures are able to take the overall count to 19.3 million.

Consequently, this wasn’t just the most watched Game of Thrones episode, but actually, the most watched episode ever aired on HBO, beating out the opening of The Sopranos fourth season which totalled 13.43 million viewers back in 2002. Although, considering the limitations of the technology back then, it’s not a completely equal playing field.
