Select schools in England have kicked off a project in which they have introduced children, who are facing emotional and/or social challenges, to yoga classes in order to help them begin to overcome some of the complications those conditions cause.

Specifically, classes at Reedham Primary in Norfolk have been introducing the activity to children with a range of special needs, including autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Consequently, thanks to the yoga teacher’s techniques that promote a sense of calm, many of those participating have began to develop the ability to manage the behaviour and responses that usually come long with any rise in stress, anxiety or depression levels.

The Head Teacher, Chris Edwards stated the following regarding the initiative:

“We have seen how the practice of yoga has a profound impact on certain children. They appear to be calmer and more at peace with themselves and their surroundings.”

“By being more in control of their feelings, their behaviour and attitudes towards learning and life in general have improved.”
