With renewable energy making its way onto science’s highest priority list for as long as most scientists can remember, hundreds of thousands of hours have been put into trying to develop the needed technology to make it happen. Well, lucky for us it looks like one team of researchers, in particular, are convinced that a breakthrough in the field is not only imminent but only a matter of years away.
Specifically, General Fusion, a Canadian company aiming to demonstrate nuclear fusion on a commercial scale is stating that they aim to have the required tech up and running as soon as 2023, not only that but they state that “This is the ‘SpaceX moment’ for fusion.” As for why this is such a big deal, nuclear fusion, the science behind the concept, has not only been incredibly difficult to contain due to it often being compared to a miniature sun, but also to make profitable in terms of energy as the event itself has always required more to carry out that what is produced at the end.
This is no surprise when you find out that the processes taking place are literally dependant on merging atomic nuclei. When this is done huge amounts of energy is released and lucky for us, no harmful byproducts. Finally, this seems to be a plausible source of energy due to the emergence of new materials as scientists being able to simplify the process somewhat.
