Earlier this week, Taiwan saw the grand opening of The ‘National Kaohsiung Centre for the Arts,’ designed by the Dutch firm Mecanoo Architects. The building set a new record for the largest performing arts centre, spanning a monumental 35 acres, and has been dubbed Taiwan’s most significant cultural investment in a generation, costing as much as £169 million.

The centre, based in the city of Kaohsiung, lies upon a former military training base, now a 116-acre subtropical park. The structure is the home to a 2,470-seat recital hall, 2,000-seat concert hall, 2,260-seat opera house and a 20,000 seat outdoor performance space, so there’s no wonder that the project took over 15 years to complete.
