UFC 229 was arguably one of the most highly anticipated events in UFC history as Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov stepped in the ring together to face off for the first time.
As for what took place, straight off the bat Khabib went for Conor’s legs as McGregor maintained some level of control on the floor and was able to see out the first round. Throughout the rest of the fight, McGregor was able to land some strikes and straight kicks to the stomach however it wasn’t enough to keep Nurmagomedov at bay with his attempts at taking Conor out on the floor. Eventually, the fourth and final round saw Khabib mount Conor and tap him out with a rear-naked choke.
As for what took place after the fight, Nurmagomedov jumped off the side of the octagon to attack McGregor’s teammate, Dillon Danis, who in all fairness impressively blocked Khabib’s flying double kick. While this was taking place, Khabib’s own teammates got into the ring and sucker punch McGregor who at this point was still sitting after his defeat. Finally, when everything was over the President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Dana White, refused to award the belt in the ring as he stated: “If I put this belt on you, people are going to start throwing shit into the Octagon.”
