After Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine being hit with a hefty $25 million lawsuit it appears it’s now Ed Sheeran’s turn to face fighting a legal battle as Marvin Gaye’s estate claims that his hit ‘Thinking Out Loud’ is a “carbon copy of Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get it On.’” Specifically, they are specified that the “melody, rhythms, harmonies, drums, bassline, backing chorus, tempo, syncopation and looping” are all taken from Gaye’s classic hit and that a fair reimbursement for copying the track is $100 million.
This seems like an outrageous number but the song has not only gone certified diamond, bagged Sheeran a Grammy Award for ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘Best Pop Solo Performance,’ but has also become the most popular wedding song in the world and raked in over 2.3 billion views on YouTube. Take a listen to both songs below to see if you can spot the copying that Gaye’s estate is claiming.
