After Melania Trump went to visit children who are being held at a migrant detention centre on the 21st of June, the US First Lady wore a khaki green Zara jacket that read “I really don’t care, do u?” on the back, this obviously caused some outrage as it’s easy to see how this is an insensitive slogan to wear on such a visit.
In response to this outrage President Donald Trump took to Twitter to say that the jacket referred to the fake news media rather than the migrant children. However, this didn’t cut it for the fashion brand, Wildfang, who decided to respond by dropping its own merchandise with the words “I really care, don’t u?” featured on the back in a similar font.
Initially there were only 100 jackets available, but after they sold out in an instance they were restocked and went on to carry on selling like hotcakes. Consequently, £188,525 worth of clothing was sold with 100% of the proceeds all being donated to support child migrants.
Wildfang’s CEO Emma McIlroy told Teen Vogue: “Last week was a really hard week to watch the news. It felt like we sunk to a new low,” adding: “I’m an immigrant, there are other immigrants on the team and it touched our team in a deeply profound way. When the image of Melania came out it felt like an insult to injury.”
“When you have a position and a platform and a reach like FLOTUS it’s a really naive to suggest that your fashion doesn’t matter. Fashion has been historically a very political way to express our views.”
