The British online fashion and beauty retailer, ASOS, have frequently shown us that they are at the forefront of fashion when it comes to setting moral standards. Whether this was their use of organic materials in their most recent collaboration with PUMA, their lack of Photoshopping when using plus-sized models, or even just showing their clothing on a variety of body types, everyone has started appreciating the steps they are taking towards a more empathy-filled fashion world.
Well it seems like despite their previous progresses they are still looking to improve as just this week they have promised to ban silk, mohair, cashmere, feathers as well as various other products that contain teeth and bone from its site starting January 2019. Peta, the animal rights organisation, obviously supported the retailer’s choice, stating that: “The global online retail platform is reflecting a profound shift in public attitudes towards the rearing and killing of animals for fashion,” adding “Consumers are changing the face of the industry by demanding that designers and retailers offer clothing and accessories that look beautiful without harming animals.”
Could this be something we see more of? Well since the likes of Gucci, Tom Ford, Versace, Giorgio Armani, Tommy Hilfiger, Stella McCartney and many more have all dropped fur, it wouldn’t be too unrealistic to expect them to drop more and more animal products over time if this shift is supported by the public. Not to mention the fact that Zara, H&M and Topshop have all made the choice to drop Mohair already. I guess we will have to wait and see how this unfolds.
