After the passing of renowned physicist Stephen Hawking, many spoke out to pay tribute to the intellectual. Well as Hawking’s ashes were interred in Scientists’ Corner at London’s Westminster Abbey on Friday in a memorial ceremony, many more continued to do so. Specifically, a number of recognisable faces attended in order to pay their respects, such as the UK astronaut Tim Peake who read a poem, Lucy Hawking and actor Benedict Cumberbatch – who played the physicist in the movie Hawking – who read biblical passages, and the Nobel laureate Professor Kip Thorne and Astronomer Royal Martin Rees who paid tribute to Hawking’s work.
As for Hawking’s final resting place, he lies in Scientist’s Corner between the remains of two other renowned scientists, Charles Darwin and Isaac Newton. This is a very rare honour to be interred at the Abbey, and one that has not been given to a scientist for almost 80 years. However, no one can argue that Steven Hawking is not worthy.
