A court rejected Reliu's request for the annulment of a death certificate which was issued in his name in 2016, according to a judgement seen on the court's website on March 16, 2018. The reason for the court's decision has not been confirmed, but according to Romanian media it was due to the deadline for changes to the certificate having passed. / AFP PHOTO / Adrian ARNAUTU (Photo credit should read ADRIAN ARNAUTU/AFP/Getty Images)

Recently a Romanian court has ruled that Constantin Reliu, a 63-year-old man is in fact deceased despite him appearing in court to argue the opposite. Specifically, the situation arose when Reliu was deported back to Romania from Turkey after working as a cook for 20 years. Within that time his wife had him officially registered as dead due to them not being able to contact him and visa versa. What followed was a logistical nightmare as by time Reliu learned of his death it was too late to have the decision annulled so to this day he remains legally deceased.

During an interview Reliu had with The Associated Press he appeared deeply emotional and started the conversation by saying “I think I am going to cry” and further expressed his desire for revenge against his wife, who now lives in Italy, he also stated: “I am not sure whether I am divorced or not,” adding: “I am not sure whether she is married to someone else or not. Nobody will tell me.”

As for the practicality of being dead, Reliu can confirm that it is in fact a pain, saying:

“I am officially dead, although I’m alive,” explaining “I have no income and because I am listed as dead, I can’t do anything.”
